About the Study
What is it?
The Sand Creek Road Complete Streets Concept Study is a collaboration between the Village of Colonie and the Capital Region Transportation Council (formerly known as the Capital District Transportation Committee), the designated Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) in the Albany-Schenectady and Saratoga Springs metropolitan area. The study is funded through the 2022-2023 Community and Transportation Linkage Planning Program.

Study Area
The study will focus on the Sand Creek Road corridor from Watervliet Shaker Road to Wolf Road, approximately 1.6 miles long and located in the Town and Village of Colonie. The study recommendations will be made for Sand Creek Road within the project limits.
About the Village of Colonie
The Village of Colonie is a strategically located community in the state of New York, known for its proximity to various landmarks such as the Albany International Airport, the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers, the Northway and the Thruway, and the scenic Catskill and Adirondack Mountains. It is also located in the triangle of Albany, Schenectady, and Troy, making it a thriving residential and business hub. The Village covers 3.3 square miles and includes over 3,200 properties, as well as a business-lined corridor along Central Avenue and a parallel transportation link, Sand Creek Road.

Study Purpose
The Sand Creek Road Complete Streets Concept Study aims to provide the Village of Colonie with recommendations to address the lack of pedestrian, bicycle, and transit facilities along Sand Creek Road in the Village and Town of Colonie. While pedestrian accommodations are available on some portions of the north side of the road, there is no dedicated bicycle infrastructure in the area. With the increase in bicycle and pedestrian traffic to nearby generators, the study will develop a plan to create a Complete Street that is safe and convenient for travel by all modes of transportation. The study will also focus on providing recommendations to reduce vehicular speed and congestion, improve safety for bicyclists and pedestrians, and boost economic growth in the study area. The recommendations from this study can be used by the Village to later acquire funding for implementation.
